  New Jersey State Requirements for Real Estate Printer Friendly Version
 

The information contained below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education, experience, and examination requirements established by the New Jersey Real Estate Commission to obtain and maintain a license as a Real Estate Salesperson or Broker. The information provided below can be found on the Commission's website. However, we recommend you contact the Real Estate Commission for more detailed information about the requirements for obtaining a Real Estate License.

   
Salesperson - Initial License
 
  - Complete and pass a 75 hour pre licensing course.
  - Make an appointment at the promissor to take your state exam, please view the candidate handbook for more information; you will need to have your completed school certificate available when making your reservation the exam fee is $60.
  - Pass the state exam with at least a 70% within one year of completing the 75 hour course.
  - Apply for licensure through a sponsoring real estate broker, you will need to send to the commission a completed Sagem-Morpho Universal fingerprint form, Sagem-Morpho finger print receipt, your promissor score report (signed and dated by your broker) and $160 license fee in the form of a money order, brokers business account, certified or cashiers check.

Broker - Initial License
   
  - Complete and pass 150 hours of broker pre-licensure education (this consists of 3 courses a 90 hour course and 2 30 hour courses).
  - Complete 3 years on a full-time basis as a salesperson and have an application for experience completed.
  - Submit application, application for experience, certificate from school for 3 broker courses and $25 fee.
  - Upon approval a certificate of examination eligibility will be mailed to the applicant you may then make an appointment with the promissor for more information please view the candidate handbook
  - Pass the state exam with at least a 70%.
    Apply for licensure if you wish to be licensed under another broker as a broker salesperson you must submit the following to the commission a completed Sagem-Morpho Universal fingerprint form, Sagem-Morpho finger print receipt, your promissor score report (signed and dated by your broker) and $270 license fee in the form of a money order, brokers business account, certified or cashiers check.
  - Apply for licensure if you wish to become  a Sole Proprietor, Employing Broker, or a Broker of Record of a licensed corporation or partnership you should contact the Licensing Services Bureau, Real Estate at 609-292-7053 ext 50118 fro information on how to process such a request.
